High life, low pay, June 29

Deep in the Gaoligong Mountains of Yunnan province lies the village of Mukeji. The farming community is among the poorest in an already poverty-stricken Nujiang prefecture. The average income is less than a third of the national average. These images, taken by Xinhua photographer Hu Chao, capture life in this remote village 1,800 metres above sea level. The only connection to the outside world for its 130 inhabitants is a one-metre-wide mountain path. Students carry a full basket of textbooks during her two-hour walk to school along the path. There is no mobile phone signal in the village, forcing people to walk several kilometres down the mountain to make a call. Home for many is a simple shack, which is extremely cold in winter. Children do homework and help with the cooking.
