Beaches in bloom, July 13

13 Jul 2015

The beaches along the coast of Shandong province have once again turned into something more resembling a peaceful green meadow. Every July since 2007, a carpet of algal bloom has blanketed at least 35,000 square kilometres of water, with some washing up to cover beaches around Qingdao. As photographers from Reuters and ImagineChina discovered, locals have learned to live with the phenomenon and some even embrace the soft carpet under their feet. Researchers attribute the bloom to climate change and increased seaweed farming in neighbouring Jiangsu. The bloom is not known to be harmful to people, but can cause extensive damage to marine life.
