Troubled waters, September 22

22 Sep 2015

The Luahe-Tianjin Water Diversion Project was built in the 1980s to channel supplies from the Luan River to Tianjin to overcome drinking water shortages in the city. Water travels from the Panjiakou Reservoir in Hebei province to the Daheiting Reservoir before passing through a 12km mountain tunnel to its final destination. The quality of water supplies in the system is deteriorating, according to Xinhua, with threats posed by fish farming, polluting factories and the dumping of waste. One resident living next to Panjiakou Reservoir said she did not dare to drink or cook with the water from the dam. Photos: Xinhua
