Bridges are among the most identifiable examples of Chinese architecture. In ancient times, Chinese bridge building was unmatched, with both arch bridges and suspension bridges originating in China. More than a million stone arch bridges are said to have been constructed in China, stretching back more than 1,700 years. The oldest still standing is the Zhaozhou Bridge across the Xiaohe River in Hebei province that was constructed between 595 and 605. Photographers from Xinhua visited some of China's finest bridges.
