A splash of colour, November 12

12 Nov 2015

Hundreds of millions of Hindus - across India and around the world including Hong Kong - celebrated Diwali yesterday. The Festival of Lights, as Diwali is also known, is a celebration of good over evil and marks the start of the Hindu new year. Prayers are made to the goddess of wealth, Lakshmi, to ask for good health and business success in the coming year. The festival is also marked by lavish feasts and gift-giving, including all things gold. US President Barack Obama also recognised the importance of festival, using a secure hotline to New Delhi for the first time to wish Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a happy Diwali. Photographers from EPA, Reuters, Bloomberg, AFP and Xinhua highlight some of the colourful celebrations in India, Nepal and Bangladesh.
