Deadly attacks across Europe provided the blueprint for last week’s major anti-terrorism drill staged by Hong Kong police. The drill - involving more than 300 officers including members of elite units - was staged to prepare the force for next month’s visit by state leaders to mark the 20th anniversary of the city’s return to Chinese sovereignty. One of the scenarios was based on actual attacks in Europe. In the drills held at a Kowloon Bay police base, a group of heavily armed “mainland terrorists” drove a van into a crowded carnival, before attacking people with knives, guns and grenades. The “terrorists” then took people hostage in a nearby building, with negotiators sent in to secure their release. Post photographer Felix Wong was there as the officers tackled the drill.
