The day we were freed: survivors of the Auschwitz concentration camp, January 26

26 Jan 2015

Seventy years ago to the day, on January 27, 1945, prisoners at the Auschwitz concentration camp were liberated following years under Nazi oppression. They survived even as two million people, mostly Jews, perished at the camp in Poland, notorious for its gas chambers. The camp was divided into three major prisons and several sub-prisons, and subjected inmates – men, women and children – to cramped conditions and hard labour. In this gallery SCMP compiles pictures of the survivors taken decades ago. Photos by AP and Reuters.
