Divine celebration, May 12

12 May 2015

Thousands headed for Shap Pat Heung in Yuen Long yesterday for one of the highlights of the festivities marking the birthday of the sea goddess Tin Hau. Post photographers Felix Wong and Nora Tam were on hand to catch the colour and spectacle of the event held annually on the 23rd day of the third month of the lunar calendar. The parade that snaked its way through the streets included lion and dragon dances, marching bands and participants dressed as mythological characters. It also featured nearly 30 fa paugroups offering floral tributes on towers to the “patron saint of fishermen” who is said to control elements including the wind and sea. The towers, with decorative figurines and ornaments, carry blessings.
