Myanmar's long war

31 Mar 2015

Government forces in Myanmar have been fighting ethnic Chinese rebels in Kokang, the latest in a series of wars with the country's minority groups. Some of the recent battles have been fought as close as 1km from the border with Yunnan province, to where tens of thousands of refugees have fled. Earlier this month five Chinese were killed by a bomb that Beijing said fell onto its territory from a Myanmar air force plane. In response, the People's Liberation Army conducted live-fire drills in the area and Chinese planes patrolled the border, though both governments have moved quickly to ease tension over the incident. Pictures from Reuters and AFP show rebel fighters and Myanmar government soldiers as well as injured Red Cross workers. They also document the lives of refugees who have fled the fighting.
