After a series of shows in Hong Kong, the mainland, Taiwan, and Japan, American-born Taiwanese singer Wang Leehom is ready to devote himself to Oscar-winning director Ang Lee's new movie, Lust, Caution.
An adaptation of Chinese author Eileen Chang's short story of the same title, it's Lee's first venture since Brokeback Mountain. In the film, set in Shanghai during the second world war, Wang (right) plays university student Kuang Yumin, who becomes involved in the assassination of a powerful politician. 'I've been preparing for this role for about two months already,' said Wang, who will co-star alongside Tony Leung Chiu-wai and mainland actress Tang Wei. 'The director is serious and extremely meticulous and has done a lot of post-production preparation.'
Lee was one of the 12,000-strong crowd at Wang's concerts at the Hong Kong Coliseum last weekend. Also present were actor-turned-director Stephen Fung Tak-lun, actor Lisa Wong Ming-chuen and Taiwanese actress Shu Qi.
'[Lee] came backstage and shook my hand before the show started. It was really great encouragement for me,' said the 30-year-old, who made his movie debut in Stanley Tong Kwai-lai's China Strike Force (2000).
Wang, who was named best singer at this year's Taiwan Golden Melody Awards, showed his versatility, playing guitar, piano, violin, drums and erhu, as well as performing a blend of Chinese and hip hop he calls 'chinked out' music. He said he also wants to write a musical. 'I've always loved movies. Now I have the chance to collaborate with Ang Lee and I can learn a lot about directing from him.'
