The front door lock opens automatically as the homeowner steps onto the porch. The living room thermostat has been preprogrammed, the lights come up gradually, and a warm meal waits in the kitchen. The smartphone also enables the owner to control, monitor and automate specific operations inside the house even remotely.

“The internet of things is revolutionising the electronics industry, and smart-home automation is the future of our business,” says Louis Liao, CEO of Excel Cell Electronic (ECE).

The company is a leading electromechanical components manufacturer and one of the largest dual-in-line package, or DIP, switch manufacturers in Taiwan.

Initially focusing on the 3C industry – computer, communication and consumer electronics – when it started 35 years ago, ECE stays abreast of technology trends. While switches still comprise the bulk of its offerings, ECE also provides industrial control switches, relays, terminal blocks for various applications, and pressing parts such as lead frames used in semiconductor devices.

To meet increasing demand for smart electronics used in home appliances and industrial applications, the company allocates 6 per cent of its annual turnover for research and development. ECE invests in top-of-the-line equipment and consistently enhances manufacturing capabilities through process automation and by keeping its technologies ahead.

Consistent with its green initiatives, ECE manufactures halogen-free products and conforms to the Restriction of Hazardous Substances directive.

“As a strategic partner to our clients, we help them achieve a competitive edge by providing diversified products with better quality, more advanced features, and shorter delivery time,” Liao says. “We can customise according to client specifications and can fulfil even low-volume requirements.”

With three production bases in China, ECE plans to further expand its sales network on the mainland. It seeks local distribution partnerships and joint venture opportunities to capture the flourishing markets of Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan.
