“A Computer is like an Art Museum...”
Euan Seow had an golden opportunity to give a speech about his coding journey at TEDxYCISHK. At the time of his speech, he was just 12 years old, and already a programmer with lots of passion in technology.
Like many other 12 year-olds, Euan enjoys playing computer games. "But for me, it wasn't just achieving a high score, or getting to the next level. I have always been curious how my games work, or why it works that way", said Euan.
In order to pursue his passion, Euan first need to convince his parents, teachers, and school. To his parents and teachers, using computer is bad for academic progress, chores, and a waste of time. Euan was restricted to using the computer for his e-homework and research that his teachers had tasked him to do.
Thus when he learned of a Scratch workshop in school, Euan immediately signed up for it. This began his journey with First Code Academy - learning AppInventor in summer camp. After the camp, he continued through the next one year taking Saturday classes to expand his programming knowledge. He managed to get her approval to attend his Saturday programming classes.
Euan realized that there was a lot of theory that he still had yet to learn. "... but I have a great bunch of instructors at First Code Academy who encouraged, counselled me and taught me to be better," said Euan.
"For me, a computer is like an Art Museum. For the work of art, something special for everyone," said Euan. He feels that a blank page on the screen allows him to share his thoughts, ideas and visions. It also allows Euan to express himself to the rest of the people who are able to see his Artwork.
For the other students, Euan shares his unique perspective: "Coding allows me a means of expressing my idea and my creativity. I'm able to create something that makes my vision and my imagination comes alive. And when I do, I have a real sense of fulfillment."
