[First published on Jan 10, 1973] HONGKONG International School was the venue of the third annual Far East Holiday Basketball tournament with teams coming from India, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and Taiwan.

The HKIS Crusaders won their first trophy in tight competition which saw the Taipei American School, champions for the last two years, dropping to fourth place.

Singapore American School came second and International School in Manila, third.

However, the Taiwan girls beat their HKIS counterparts by first place on the distaff side.

HKIS, winners in the last two years, were second, followed International School of Kuala Lumpur, third, and American International School of New Delhi, fourth.

“Best Cheerleaders” award went to HKIS for the second year and ‘Sportsmanship” honours were shared by Seoul Foreign School and American International School in New Delhi.

Named to the Boys All-Stars were - Brad Challberg, Jon von Behren and Tal Albertson (Hongkong), Sid Neuman (Taiwan), Steve Cooper (New Delhi), Randy Fox (Singapore) and Carl cox (Manila).

Girls All-stars were — Cara Laughlin, Debbie Clark and Miriam Clung (Hong Kong), Joan Garg (New Delhi), LeeAnn Letourneau (Kuala Lumpur), and Carolyn Cole (Taiwan).

More than 150 athletes, cheerleaders, and spectators were in the Colony for the four-day tournament, which was the largest of its kind yet held.

The matches are held because participating schools are isolated in regard to American-type competition, to develop friendships among the schools and individuals, and to promote good sportsmanship.
