[SCMP Archive] Hong Kong students return from US capital
HKIS pupils John and Cathy participate in prestigious, week-long social studies course at Capitol Hill.
[First published on May 07, 1974] Two students from Hong Kong International School, Repulse Bay, have returned after attending the “Presidential Classroom for Young Americans,” a week-long social studies course in Washington, D.C., which places special emphasis on the political scene in the United States. The students are Cathy Furey, Form VI, and John Trepanier, Form V.
Richard Siegert, HKIS Social Studies Department Chairman, the trip coordinator, attended the course himself last summer, the first time a teacher from Hong Kong had attended the course.
For the most part, the course consisted of seminars on topics ranging from the U.S. Presidency to the Central Intelligence Agency (C.I.A.).
At Capitol Hill in Washington, Cathy and John watched Congress in session, and met Senators Edward Kennedy, George McGovern, and Fong, the Chinese-American senator from Hawaii.
Cathy and John learned that the House of Representatives is 50 per cent for President Nixon’s impeachment and the Senate, 75 per cent. They added that the probability of his actual impeachment is about 50 per cent.
Also attending the week-long course were 180 students from the United States and a dozen more from American schools abroad.
