Both parents and students pleased with new school’s facilities.
[First published on Sep 11, 1967] Some 700 school children will begin he chool year on Thursday at the Hong Kong International School, the first Government-approved American school to open in the Colony.
Parents toured the school yesterday. They were invited to see the facilities it had to offer. The school is situated just off South Bay Road, and has 32 classrooms capable of accommodating 750 pupils.
The school, which will be run by the Missouri Synod of the Lutheran Church, will be the first in the Colony run entirely on the American system of education.
The cost of the building and equipment was about $5.7m. The Lutheran Church paid one-third of the cost. The remainder was raised by loans from private sources. The land is on lease from Government.
“That is why our tuition fees are tightly higher than average,” Mr Robert E. Christian, the Headmaster, said. Tuition fees alone range from $3,000 to $3.500 a year.
