[SCMP Archive] Young Jill wins top prize for ‘Nessie’ painting
[First published on Dec 16, 1974] A green head sticking out of the lake surface, several humps and a thick green tail – this was Jill Amstutz’s version of the legendary Loch Ness monster, and it was enough to win her first prize in a painting contest organized by the Hilton Hotel.
The contest was part of the hotel’s Scottish Festival to be held from January 7 to 27.
Pupils of the German Swiss International School, the Kennedy Road Primary School and the Hong Kong International School were invited to enter the contest. Thirty entries were put on show yesterday – the best 10 from each school.
Young Jill is a pupil of the HKIS, which won the first three prizes. Originally, only one prize was it have been presented, but the four judges thought that the “high standard of work” deserved more – thus the best four entries were given awards.
Jill’s painting will be enlarged and put on show for the duration of the festival in the Eagle’s Nest. She will also receive a $300 gift voucher from Lane Crawford, and her parents will be able to enjoy a free dinner in the Eagle’s Nest.
