The 13th Annual HKAHC Invitational Amateur Ice Hockey Tournament is finally underway and the Hong Kong Amateur Hockey Club is honored to welcome tournament debut team, Mongolia Capitals. The Capitals are a team made up of a mix of experienced veterans along with a large number of teenagers who have made the journey to Hong Kong to gain more exposure in the hockey world while having a positive mindset to have an enjoyable tournament.

The entire hockey in Mongolia is played outdoors which allows for a great atmosphere but at the same time limits their training during the summer seasons. According to team manager Mergen Arslan, the ice is put up around October and they are able to play until March. Once the ice melts, they resort to inline hockey to further their training. Playing outdoors may seem like a great winter classic but temperatures can drop to around -30 degrees Celsius with heavy snowfall. Despite these tough winter conditions, those involved in hockey in Mongolia work tirelessly to water the ice every morning and make the ice perfect for everyone to practice on.

The Capitals are faced with more than their opponents here in Hong Kong, they must adapt to the difference in temperature, ice conditions and going from playing outdoors to indoors. The Capitals are ready for this test and have come to Hong Kong to make a statement.

Arslan states that, “I would like to thank Mr. Thomas Wu, who has gone to great length to bring us here. Also, HockeyPanda.com and many others for sponsoring us. We believe this tournament would be fun and a good learning environment for us and all other participants. Everyone from the Mongolian team is very excited for this tournament in HK and we are looking forward for a great experience.”

The Capitals are coming into this tournament with a great attitude, one focused on growth and development. When asking how this tournament can help the future of Mongolian hockey, Arslan replied that they want to learn to be, “gracious in defeat and humble in victory.” Fans and opposing teams are excited to see this team perform in this year’s tournament. The Capitals will play their first game against Pilipinas, Friday night on September 18th at 19:30 at Mega Ice.
