AHL - Season Champions
The regular season champion of this year’s Hong Kong Amateur Hockey Club “Regular Division” is a familiar face; IceWolves.
This HKAHC perennial powerhouse took the championship again this year, in similar fashion as last year; by a mere 1 point over a new league team Agon Knights. The previous year, IceWolves took the regular season crown by one point over NEWAY Wildcats, who played in the Novice Division this season.
The teams in this division will now split into two groups, with IceWolves facing off with the #4 seed HKAIH and Agon Knights matching up against #3 seed Gaggia Empire. Teams seeding #5-9 will now enter a round robin format playoff to determine the Division B champion.
While IceWolves may be poised to take another league playoff championship, it is easier said than done. All the teams at the top have played each other close and while they went undefeated in the regular season against HKAIH, they were a less than impressive 1-1-2 against Agon Knights and Gaggia Empire.
To further illustrate the contrast, the league leader in goaltender statistics was Jerome Lui for IceWolves, with a 1.579 Goals Against Average and a 90.396 Save Percentage. On the other side, the #1 scorer in the league goes to Leon Mo of Gaggia Empire with 42 points in 16 games. 25 of those points came via goals scored and 5 of them counting as the game winner. The leagues #2 scorer is Keith Hong of Agon Knights, who tallied 30 points in 14 games. He posted numbers which were a bit more balanced, with 16 goals and 14 assists with 5 of those goals counting as the game winner. 3rd in scoring was Cosney Lee of HKAIH with 28 points in 15 games. 17 of those points were goals scored with 2 counting as the game winner. IceWolves have only 1 player in the top 7 league scorers, so it will be interesting to see which factor leads to a championship; Offensive prowess or defensive strength.
The regular season champion of this year’s Hong Kong Amateur Hockey Club “Novice Division” is a new team on the block; Bear Fighters.
This team is formed by Alton Ho, with a delicate balance of experience and vitality. Led by Ray Li, William Yu and Kevin Lam in goal as their seasoned veterans, also on the team are Reece Tong and Jo Ma who serve as their young gun. Also worth mentioning are the 2 pairs of Father-and-Son on the roster, Jim Liu and Andrew Liu, and Ho Kwok Wing and Ho Ka Ho. The 2 young men are the leading scorers on the team and their fathers are the backbone on defense.
