Berliner German Bar and Restaurant

Shop G01B, D Deck, Discovery Bay. Tel: 2987 8203. This relaxed spot with a seaview and spacious outdoor seating has a welcoming atmosphere. Recommended: the Guinness-like Fischer's Hell (half a litre, HK$60).

Butler

5/F Mody House, 30 Mody Road, TST. Tel: 2724 3828. A Tokyo-style drinking den favoured by Japanese customers, the bar is intimate and staffed by bartenders who can make cocktails to match your mood. Recommended: the 10-year original cask-aged Laphroaig whisky (HK$80).

Captain's Bar

Dharma Den

2/F The Workstation, 43 Lyndhurst Terrace, Central. Tel: 9813 1579. A great terrace with an outdoor grill in a Tibetan-themed bar makes up for a lacklustre drinks list. Recommended: the 12-year-old Glenfiddich (HK$75).

Envie

G/F, 48 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 2522 8318. A breezy, inviting space in neutral and beige tones that feels intimate. The bar has a wine-heavy, cocktail-dominated list balanced by a few heavy duty drinks. Recommended: Lambloch Estate's South Australian Shiraz (HK$52).

Flutes

27 Elgin Street, SoHo, Central. Tel: 2810 0005. What could beat an unpretentious atmosphere in a prominent SoHo spot? The extensive drinks list includes many champagnes, wines and cocktails but the wines are generally a safer bet than the cocktails. Recommended: the Domaine Magellan Merlot 2007 (HK$70).

The Globe

Garley Building, 45-53 Graham Street, Central. Tel: 2543 1941. The Globe is a smart English pub, with one of the widest and best selections of beers in Hong Kong, as well as excellent pub fare. Recommended: Typhoon T8, which is brewed on Lantau Island.

Hush

G/F, 2 Gleanealy, Central. Tel: 2537 2281. This chill-out bar away from the hubbub of nearby Lan Kwai Fong and Wyndham Street offers a casual place to unwind. Kila

Upper Basement, 79 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 2522 8118. Hong Kong is not short of Irish bars, but the owners of Kila have taken a different approach: they've done their best to actually feel Irish. Recommended: the Guinness, of course.

La Piola

Lily

6/F LKF Tower, 33 Wyndham St, Central. Tel: 2810 6166. Modelled after the salons and supper clubs that flourished at the turn of the 20th century. Recommended: the Elderflower Paloma, combining tequila, lime, grapefruit and soda water infused with elderflower.

Medusa

Basement, 49 Staunton Street, Central. Tel: 2858 3129. Bring your own party to possibly Hong Kong's smallest bar with its decor of severed heads. Standard and signature cocktails are all well-made and the wine list is brief but interesting. Recommended: the soup bowl-sized lemon daiquiri (HK$78).

MO Bar

Red Bar

4/F Two IFC, 8 Finance Street, Central. Tel: 8129 8882. With an open rooftop, Red has a consistently good DJ and an atmosphere which suits afternoon coffees or evening cocktails. Recommended: despite priceless vistas and rooftop cool, the area is also a public space, so bring your own and drink in the view.

Shore

3-4/F L Place, 139 Queen's Road Central. Tel: 2915 1638. Spread over two floors, this high-concept space features fine dining upstairs (Onshore), and a warm and relaxed bar with an 1,800 sq ft terrace downstairs (Offshore). Recommended: the Surprise Me! (HK$90) cocktail.

Sugar

32/F East Hotel, 29 Taikoo Shing Road. Tel: 3968 3968. One of the few bars in the area with an outdoor terrace, the chic Sugar at the boutique East Hotel makes for a sweet alternative to the Central-Causeway Bay hip zone. Recommended: the cool music.

Tazmania Ballroom

1/F LKF Tower, 33 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 2801 5009. Arguably the city's sleekest pool hall, this lounge bar is straight out of Hoxton. Recommended: the 'F*** Me Up', a cocktail with a serious alcohol kick, including amaretto, Malibu and vodka.

Vibes

5/F Mira Hotel, 118 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2368 1111. The secluded alfresco bar is relaxed. A few twists on classic cocktails enliven a list that is heavy on whisky but includes premium vodkas and rums. There are also shisha and cigar menus. Recommended: the S&M (scotch and mint, HK$90).

Volume Beat

LG/F, 62 Jervois Street, Sheung Wan. Tel: 2857 7683. This nightclub has a loyal following for its eclectic music. Stiff cocktails are a strong feature, although the chrysanthemum martini tasted a little too much like medicine. Recommended: Strawberry Mini Boom champagne cocktail (HK$120).

W52

G/F, 52 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 6768 5252. Our favourite bar on Wyndham is as chic and sophisticated as ever, as long as you stick to spirits and cocktails.
