Dawn Loggins

The 18-year-old American who grew up in a ramshackle home with no electricity or running water and was abandoned by her drug-abusing parents last year has been accepted by Harvard University. After being left homeless, she got a job as a janitor at her high school in a small town in North Carolina. A school custodian took her into her home and she has now graduated with excellent grades.

Queen Elizabeth

The 86-year-old British monarch celebrated her diamond jubilee, with thousands of people taking part in events commemorating her 60 years on the throne. 'It has touched me deeply to see so many thousands of families, neighbours and friends celebrating together in such a happy atmosphere,' she said in a message broadcast on the BBC. She also thanked her husband, Prince Philip, who is 91 today, for helping to organise the celebrations. He spent five nights in hospital with a bladder infection after spending hours in the cold and rain watching the jubilee Thames River Pageant last Sunday.
