Chocolate ice cream

Movenpick Swiss Chocolate

The flavours of this brand are quite subtle, which means that the first spoonful may seem uninteresting. Don't be deceived - this satiates chocolate cravings and is a great summer refreshment at the same time. Shavings of chocolate provide a slight crunch and are well-distributed, adding pleasing bursts of cocoa richness.

HK$27, 175ml, City'super, citywide and HK$89.90, 900ml, ParknShop, citywide

Godiva Ice Cream Belgian Dark Chocolate

It's incredibly creamy and smooth - a treat to lick from a cone. As Godiva is known as a chocolate company, we expected a more intense flavour. While this isn't the frozen equivalent of a chocolate truffle, with 80 per cent cocoa content it is still as good as a rich chocolate mousse. It certainly has a long aftertaste.

HK$39, Godiva, shop 1029-30, Level One, IFC Mall, 1 Harbour View Street, Central

Haagen-Dazs Belgian Chocolate

This ice cream is intensely sugary - which is either its biggest draw or drawback, depending on the sweetness of your tooth. It detracts from the flavour of the chocolate, which was uninteresting. The little flecks of chocolate only really add textural interest. This was the only tub that included a spoon.

XTC Gelato Chocolate

With a much darker colour and the only ice cream that proudly lists the lauded Valrhona chocolate as one of its ingredients, it's almost a given that this should be the most intense of the samples. While it is strongly flavoured, it tastes more like frozen cake batter. It also has an earthy tone to it that overshadows the chocolate flavours.

HK$25, 132ml and HK$59, 473ml, City'super, citywide

I Scream Chocolate Gelato

While the light brown colour leaves much to be desired, this was the most balanced in terms of flavour. It is best left to thaw slightly before eating to give it a chance to soften. The chocolate has a chance to shine, as it isn't overshadowed by sweetness, and there is a nice milky flavour that creates a full, round finish. Annoyingly, the tub has a tendency to chip and crack.
