Octogenarian opera celebration

Some 300 82-year-olds were invited to celebrate the reopening of the renovated Yau Ma Tei Theatre - 82 years after it first opened in 1930. They were treated to two Cantonese Opera performances in the Grade II listed building, which began life as a cinema before being converted into a venue for traditional opera.

Price of petrol gets cheaper

Fuel company Shell cut Hong Kong petrol prices starting this morning. Shell FuelSave and Shell V-Power are now priced HK$15.99 per litre and HK$16.93 per litre respectively, both down by HK$0.30 per litre. 'Singapore prices for petrol have decreased and led to a decrease in product costs,' explained Avis Lau, Retail Operations Manager of Shell Hong Kong.

Bidders lap up wine auction

Christie's sold 93 per cent of its 301 lots, realising HK$16.8 million, at an auction of fine and rare wines yesterday. A case of 1988 vintage Domaine de la Romanee-Conti was the top lot, selling for HK$907,500. A lot of the same vintage was sold for HK$702,775 by Christie's in London earlier this month, while another fetched HK$1.6 million in a Sotheby's Kong Kong auction in April. Of the top 10 lots yesterday, different vintages and assortments of Romanee-Conti accounted for five. A case of 1982 Petrus sold for HK$508,200, exceeding its estimate of HK$500,000. 'Confirming recent trends, there was competitive bidding for burgundy, for white wine and for Bordeaux's 'super second' growths, and ever stronger results for Italian and Napa valley wine,' Christie's Asia head of wine Charles Curtis said.

Appeal for help to find missing 81-year-old

Police are appealing to the public for information on the whereabouts of a man who disappeared on Friday. The 81-year-old Cheung Kit-sau lives in Laguna City in Lam Tin and is about 1.65 metres tall. He was last seen wearing a yellow T-shirt, black trousers and sports shoes.

Truck driver killed in roadworks smash

A 30-year-old man died when the truck he was driving rammed through roadworks barriers and into a bulldozer. The driver had to be cut free from the wreckage but was declared dead at the scene. The crash happened as the truck headed towards Tsuen Wan along Castle Peak Road in Kowloon.
