Fifth person this month dies collecting clams

The body of a 72-year-old man, believed to be the fifth person to die while collecting clams this month, was pulled from waters off the airport yesterday. The man had told his family on Thursday afternoon he was going to Tung Chung Bay to collect clams, and he was reported missing early yesterday. Police said they had found nothing suspicious about the death. On June 10, the body of a 58-year-old woman who had gone to the same bay to collect clams the previous day was found. And on June 1, a 56-year-old man drowned while collecting clams at Tuen Mun and a 62-year-old friend collapsed and died while trying to rescue him.

Centre issues warning on dangerous infections

The Centre for Health Protection cautioned the public to be vigilant with personal hygiene after two infection cases came to its attention. Tests confirmed a 57-year-old man admitted to Kwong Wah Hospital with an abscess was infected with a superbug, community acquired Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The patient was discharged on June 13. The centre is also investigating the death in Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Thursday of a nine-month-old boy of a suspected enterovirus infection, the second fatal case this year. The centre recorded one fatal enterovirus case in each of the past three years.

The nomination period for the September 9 Legislative Council election would be July 18 to 31, the government announced.
