The London Olympics ambassador and former England captain discovered that he had been omitted from Great Britain's Olympic soccer squad. Beckham was regarded as a potential skipper but was overlooked after coach Stuart Pearce travelled to the US to assess Beckham's form last week. 'Everyone knows how much playing for my country has always meant to me,' Beckham said.

Bob Diamond

The chief executive of British bank Barclays came under heavy pressure to resign after the lender was fined the equivalent of HK$3.5 billion by regulators for fixing interbank interest rates. Shares in Barclays fell more than 15 per cent and the government vowed to look at introducing criminal penalties for the offence.

Zhang Yimou

China's most famous film director was at the heart of a new Railways Ministry scandal after the National Audit Office found it had spent 18.5 million yuan (HK$22.7 million) on a five-minute promotional video directed by Zhang. An ex-employee of the ministry's media centre said: 'I would say we did more than 95 per cent of the film. The Railways Ministry just wanted to use Zhang's name.'
