Bars

Alfie's by Kee

M18-19, M/F Prince's Building, 10 Chater Road, Central. Tel: 2530 4422. With its dark wood, dimmed lights and leather lounges to sink into, Alfie's more than matches the Dunhill boys' club aesthetic. Recommended: Pimm's by Kee and the lemon grass martini.

Brotzeit

G6-UG16, Tsim Sha Tsui Centre, 66 Mody Road, Tsim Sha Tsui East, Kowloon. Tel: 2316 2666. Brotzeit, a new, modern German bar and restaurant specialising in beer and beer mixes, such as Affensoft, with mango or banana juice (HK$45 for 330ml), and the Schwarzer, with cola (HK$45 for 330ml). Recommended: the Salvator is full of chocolate and malt flavours (HK$50/bottle).

Castro's

1/F, 16 Ashley Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2957 8041. Don't dress up to visit this cigar smoke-laden Latin-vibe bar. Generous pours of powerful margaritas, daiquiris and mojitos, and one of the best pina coladas in town are the real draw. There's little point in drinking beer and wine when the cocktails are this good. Recommended: the ginger mojito, packed with freshly crushed mint and ice (HK$65).

The China Bar

G/F Ho Lee Commercial Building, 44 D'Aguilar Street, Lan Kwai Fong. Tel: 2526 5992. Formerly Bar George, the cavernous space goes heavy on the red and dragons for its decorative motif but is comfortable and has a swell dance area. From a wide range of drinks, the cocktails were most eye-catching. Recommended: the Merry Berry cocktail of Bombay Sapphire gin, fresh mint, raspberry, strawberry, cranberry juice and lime (HK$89).

Club 71

Man Hing Lane (off Hollywood Road), Central. Tel: 2858 7071. A mellow haunt off Hollywood Road, with an impromptu alfresco area. A good range of beers and cocktails but leave the wines alone. A perfect place for casual drinks. Recommended: Amaretto sour.

Dada Bar and Lounge

2/F The Luxe Manor, 39 Kimberley Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 3763 8778. Bold leather couches and dim lighting make for a swanky and impressive destination in Tsim Sha Tsui. Recommended: the eponymous Dada cocktail includes pomegranate, light rum and lime, with a touch of spearmint.

Eivissa

77 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 2520 5818. This slightly dark but definitely cosy nook moves from escape to midnight dance floor. Take advantage of excellent happy hour offers on champagne and cocktails such as the Penicillin (Scotch, lemon, honey and ginger). Recommended: Grimbergen draught (HK$65), an orangey, toffee-flavoured Belgian beer.

Flutes

27 Elgin Street, SoHo, Central. Tel: 2810 0005. What could beat an unpretentious atmosphere in a prominent SoHo spot? The extensive drinks list that includes many champagnes, wines and cocktails is a strong lure but the wines are generally a safer bet than the cocktails. Recommended: the Domaine Magellan Merlot 2007 (HK$70).

Fly

G/F, 24-30 Ice House Street, Central. Tel: 2810 9902. A sleek interior, bass-heavy sounds and eye-catching visual effects make for a serious clubbing experience but also mean spending serious money. The small number of beers is compensated by the ever-changing range of premium spirits and house-infused vodka based cocktails. Recommended: the Sawaadini lemon grass and kaffir lime vodka with ginger and chilli.

Hive 101

Shop A, 101/F International Commerce Centre, 1 Austin Road West, Kowloon. Tel: 2972 2666. Once found, this quiet bar with glorious views is a tranquil spot for conversation. Cocktails blend Canadian ice wines with Japanese spirits and plenty of fruit; the wine and shooters are pretty good too. Recommended: the blend of ice wine, Yoichi whisky, cranberry juice and lemon called a Maple Route.

Kila

Upper Basement, 79 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 2522 8118. Hong Kong is not short of Irish bars, thanks to two large chains and a host of independent Irish-themed pubs, but the owners of Kila have taken a different approach: they've done their best to actually feel Irish. Recommended: the Guinness, of course, and the ice-cold Asahi on tap.

Le Jardin

1/F, 10 Wing Wah Lane, Lan Kwai Fong, Central. Tel: 2877 1100. At Le Jardin you can gather friends round a table and enjoy the atmosphere rather than just stand and be bombarded by pop music, as is the norm elsewhere in LKF. Recommended: Hoegaarden.

Le Tambour

52A Peel Street, Central. Tel: 3114 6320. French decor, wine and patrons make for a casual spot for wine lovers and the venue also occasionally hosts jazz nights. Recommended: from a boutique winery list, we liked sweet gewurztraminer from Vallee Noble Seppi Landmann (HK$70).

Linguini Fini

G/F The L Place, 139 Queen's Road Central. Tel: 2857 1333. This dark bar with booths that act like time machines is sure to be the cause of many an entertainingly lost night. The cocktails are all HK$58 and while there were some experiments that didn't work for us, others were more successful. Recommended: the bourbon, lemon and mint combo Whiskey Smash.

Medusa

Basement, 49 Staunton Street, Central. Tel: 2858 3129. Bring your own party to possibly Hong Kong's smallest bar with its decor theme of severed heads. Standard and signature cocktails are all well-made and the wine list is brief but interesting. Recommended: the soup bowl-sized lemon daiquiri (HK$78).

Taboo

G/F, 16 Arbuthnot Road, Central; tel: 9643 6571. A two-level bar for hip night owls that specialises in molecular cocktails. Try the tart, refreshing Kiwi Caviar, mixing champagne, lemon juice, gin and elderflower. Recommended: the marshmallowy Smoked Cigar Old Fashioned (HK$130).

Tazmania Ballroom

1/F LKF Tower, 33 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 2801 5009. The coolest, sleekest pool hall in Hong Kong, this lounge bar is straight out of Hoxton. Recommended: the 'F*** Me Up', a cocktail with a serious alcohol kick, including amaretto, Malibu and vodka.

Tott's and Roof Terrace

34/F The Excelsior hotel, 281 Gloucester Road, Causeway Bay. Tel: 2837 6786. A glamorous hotel rooftop bar as suitable for business entertaining as for romantic soirees. An extensive list is heavy on the cocktails and wines but we were happiest with a 10-year-old port. The happy hour is good value. Recommended: Moonlight Lychee Blossom, a combination of vodka, elderflower, lemon and champagne (HK$98).

Vibes

5/F Mira Hotel, 118 Nathan Road, Tsim Sha Tsui. Tel: 2368 1111. The secluded alfresco bar is very relaxed. A few twists on classic cocktails enliven a list that is heavy on whiskies but also includes premium vodkas and rums. There are also shisha and cigar menus. Recommended: the S&M (Scotch and mint, HK$90).

Vida Rica

2/F Mandarin Oriental Macau, Avenida Dr Sun Yat Sen, Outer Harbour, Macau. Tel: (853) 8805 8928. A chic, sophisticated bar with views over the Macau Tower and Nam Van Lake, the bar serves cocktails designed by a New York mixologist and has great nooks and crannies to hide in. Recommended: the Lagavulin 25-year cask-strength single malt whisky (HK$490 per shot).

Volume Beat

LG/F, 62 Jervois Street, Sheung Wan. Tel: 2857 7683. A pink nightclub with a loyal following for its eclectic music. Stiff cocktails are a strong feature. Recommended: Strawberry Mini Boom champagne cocktail (HK$120).

Woolloomooloo

31/F The Hennessy, 256 Hennessy Road, Wan Chai. Tel: 2893 6960. With amazing views over the city through the floor-to-ceiling windows, and from the breathtaking rooftop bar, Woolloomooloo is bringing a new kind of cool to Wan Chai. Recommended: everything tastes pretty good when you're already on top of the world.

Yumla

Lower Basement, 79 Wyndham Street, Central. Tel: 2147 2383. This popular bar attracts the music obsessives and is best known for its ear-bleeding sound system and top-quality DJs. Recommended: the mojito (HK$85) is one of the best in town.
