Pizzeria pubblico

G/F Tsun Wing Lane, SoHo
Tel: 2530 2779
Open: 11am-midnight (Friday and Saturday until 2am)
Cuisine: Italian

Price: less than HK$100 without drinks. There's no service charge.

Ambience: casual. Diners order from the cashier at the counter and get the food themselves when their numbers are called, but the staff clear the tables.

Pros: the pizzas, available whole (from HK$200-HK$260) or by the slice (HK$30-HK$45), are a good example of a bready but not chewy crust that's sturdy enough to stand up to the toppings. For most, the crust and toppings were nicely balanced.

Cons: we didn't like the overfilled (overtopped?) pizzas - the Brooklyn Special (house-made mozzarella, fried eggplant, roasted garlic and peppers), and one of the daily specials, salumi (which included salami, ham and red onions), both of which were too busy. Those of us who have eaten at inexpensive by-the-slice pizzerias in New York recognised and enjoyed the plain pizza, which is oilier and cheesier than many are used to. The chicken parm sub (HK$100) and meatball parm sub (HK$100) were too bready for the amount of filling.

Recommended dishes: four of us tried all seven pizzas available that day. The crust on all of them had enough char, and was good enough that we finished even the unsauced edge, which was nicely puffy. We liked the sausage pizza and the pepperoni version but were torn over the best one - the bianca or the Pubblico. The bianca, without tomato sauce, was almost austere in its toppings, but flavourful. The Pubblico, topped with tomato sauce, had richly melting blobs of mozzarella and ricotta.

What else? Posto Pubblico is down a small lane next to Kinwick Centre, between Hollywood Road and Staunton Street.
