Paws for thought

Hello pupketeers! What great Olympics. I call them the 'whatta' Olympics. Poor Liu, whatta disappointment! German diver Stephan Feck's breathtaking fall from the board, whatta shocker! Britain's medal run, whatta celebration! Deputy editor Karly was rejoicing over Grenada's gold, whatta party! The editor, Susan, couldn't believe her eyes at the dressage, whatta s'prise!

Heptathlon goddess, Britain's Jessica Ennis, whatta woman! Jamaica's Usain Bolt, whatta legend! Australia failure, whatta shame! The queen's quantum entrance to the opening ceremony, whatta whatta whatta!

But you know what is great about these Games? The underdog is having its day. (See what I did there? I mixed my idioms.) It just goes to show that dreams can, and do, come true; that you can achieve miracles against all odds. If you could sing Climb Every Mountain here, it would work really well.

New Zealand, that green alpaca farm near Australia, has been very proud of its athletes. So proud, in fact, that one of their government departments worked out 'medals on a per capita basis'. It means that, after a lot of work with a calculator, if we had to share out all the medals won with every person in the country, Grenada comes out on top! It's okay, I don't know where it is either, and honestly, I think Karly had something to do with the calculations. China, on the other hand, doesn't look so good.

Which got me thinking ...

Have you seen the pictures on Facebook of those poor mainland children training to be gymnasts? It looks like they're in agony, and we can tell they are because they're crying! You can be sure children learning gymnastics in the United States or Britain are not being treated like that. It would be all over the media and the public would put an end to it right away.

So why is it still going on in our beloved motherland? This is not the way to sporting greatness.

And even if China won every single gymnastic medal in the Olympics for ever more, isn't it time we stopped torturing little children? It really raises my hackles when I see pics of their misery, and I wish that I could do something to help them. All the medals China won in the gymnastics were forged by the tears of little children.

I guess it's an extreme form of tiger parenting - maybe you know something about that yourselves. Speaking of tiger parenting, are your thoughts turning to school? There are only a few more weeks left of summer fun, so I hope you are making the best of them.

Whatever you're doing, I hope you're all having a grrrrrreat summer!

Woof, over and out!
