Cook sues over sacking following illness diagnosis
A cook fired after he was diagnosed with heart disease is suing his former employer, Hopkins (Jordon) Nursery Homes, in the District Court for HK$27,000. The claim by Chan Chiu, who is being assisted by the Equal Opportunities Commission, says the company discriminated against him because of his health problem. He says his supervisor agreed to give him leave for surgery and recovery but later sacked him.
Rent, not wage floor, main issue for firms, poll finds
The high cost of rent was the main concern of small and medium-sized enterprises, and introduction of the minimum wage in May last year had had 'little impact' on them, a survey by the People's Alliance for a Minimum Wage found. The group, which interviewed 194 SMEs in June and July, called for the government to increase the wage floor from HK$28 an hour to HK$35 an hour.
HK$1m in gold, jewellery and cash stolen at office
Thieves escaped with gold, jewellery and cash worth HK$1 million from the Yau Ma Tei premises of Getech Industries, a company owned by Bangladeshi merchant Abedin Rashidul. The burglary was discovered on Thursday night when an employee returned to the office.
String of charges after Tsuen Wan car chase
A driver led police on a chase in Tsuen Wan after they tried to stop him for driving a car without a licence plate. He was eventually caught and arrested for furious driving, taking a vehicle without authority, driving while disqualified and without third party insurance, and assaulting a police officer.
Call for HOS to take over flats under construction
The Federation of Trade Unions urged the government to consider switching flats being built under the My Home Purchase Scheme to the Home Ownership Scheme.
