Legal aid

LEGAL aid is to be extended to cover election petition cases in light of the controversies over the district board election in September.

In the Legal Aid (Amendment) Bill 1995 gazetted yesterday, the Government proposed legal aid be extended to individuals to pursue election petitions under the Bill of Rights.

The Government has been under pressure from political parties and legal experts to grant aid to people seeking election petitions since the September poll, which saw 10 candidates disqualified.
