THE deputy taxman has so much work he needs more staff, legislators were told yesterday.
The Deputy Commissioner of Inland Revenue was overloaded with work related to day-to-day supervision and to the handling of tax penalties and appeals.
The Government said there was a bottleneck at senior management level which was beginning to affect both the administration and operation of the department.
This was particularly the case in some of the department's priority areas where the demand for the deputy commissioner's input and guidance had increased considerably.
According to the document circulated to legislators, priority areas include the tackling of tax evasion and avoidance, negotiations on double taxation relief arrangements with other countries, the use of information technology and the proposed pay-as-you-earn scheme.
The commissioner proposes creating an additional deputy commissioner post, initially on a temporary basis to December, 31, 1997.
A review would be conducted in 1997 to determine whether the post should be retained on a permanent basis.
The proposed annual salary of the D3 post would be a 'mid-point' $1,372,800.
