Biggest HK vessel to be named

CHIEF Secretary Anson Chan will today name the largest container vessel to go on Hong Kong's ship register.

The 4,960-teu OOCL Hong Kong will be christened at an on-dock ceremony at Terminal 4 of Hong Kong International Terminals.

The vessel is the latest addition to the fleet of Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), Hong Kong's largest container shipping company. OOCL chairman C. H. Tung will assist in the ceremony.

The vessel, built in South Korea, is the third of the six ships contracted last year as part of OOCL's long-term strategy to enhance its customer services.

Sister vessels OOCL California and OOCL America were delivered in August and November.

OOCL Hong Kong will be crewed by seamen from the territory.

The ship, classed by American Bureau of Shipping, is fast at 25 knots and has 300 reefer plugs.
