AN early resolution on the deadlock of issuing Personal Communication System (PCS) licences is expected, director of the Office of Telecommunications Alex Arena says.
Mr Arena said the licences were still being considered by the Sino-British Joint Liaison Group (JLG), with the Chinese side warning Chinese approval was needed as the licences straddled the handover.
'As long as we get a favourable response from JLG, then we will issue the licences,' Mr Arena said, adding the result would be released very soon and that he was confident the mobile phone market would not be affected by the delay.
There are about 700,000 mobile phone subscribers in the territory.
The PCS bidding process, which ended in March last year, attracted applications from 14 companies.
