Skittish US

Your most recent condemnation of President Bill Clinton ('Clinton's discourtesy', South China Morning Post, July 15), ignores the reasoning behind the aborted visit of General Chi Haotian.

Since it was only four months ago that US ships were in the line of fire from Chinese missiles, it is most understandable that Washington would feel skittish in honouring the Chinese general in charge of such an operation. I am too well aware that many people would like President Clinton to act in a more malleable manner so that the process of personal enrichment can continue unabated, but then he would have to answer to the US voter.
