Neglected

Isn't it ironic now that reports tell us the Philippine economy is doing so well, that its migrant workers continue to go through hell abroad? The continued callous treatment (South China Morning Post, September 4) of the women who have been propping up their country's economy should be a source of shame for the Philippine Government. But instead there is official disdain and neglect - and when the media exposes these sins, a lot of official buck-passing goes on.

The attitude of Filipino bureaucrats is that these migrant workers are only females, after all, who belong to the lower rungs of the socio-economic ladder. All the fine words emanating from Manila about the country's economic globalisation, massive foreign investments and growing tourism, mean nothing when one considers how the welfare of thousands of these destitute women toiling abroad is ignored by Manila's power brokers.

There is only one way to describe the attitude of the Filipino elite towards their disadvantaged people - it stinks.
