Don't make waves in Timor

THE allegations made by Peter Wesley-Smith in his letter headlined ''Tireless campaigner has not forgotten East Timorese'' (Post, January 22) is inconceivable, untrue, unfriendly and really against Indonesia.

His appeal to all Hongkong residents to remember the fate of East Timorese under Indonesian control etc. . . is really baseless. I have visited Indonesia and also Dili in East Timor several times and do not know of any genocide, brutal behaviour or torture by the Indonesian Army.

Also, in October 1989, when Pope John Paul II visited various parts of Indonesia, including East Timor, he witnessed religious freedom and tolerance being practised there.

Your agitation will not affect the Hongkong people. We can see this from Governor Patten and his family's recent visit to Bali which he even extended by four days.

There is no dispute between the Indonesians and Hongkong people, and I appeal to Mr Wesley-Smith not to create any unnecessary disturbances.
