Investments 'pay' in Tibet

On the eve of the Dalai Lama's visit to Taiwan, China is stepping up its propaganda campaign to boost the achievements of Tibet under its rule.

Xinhua (the New China News Agency) said Tibet had made remarkable infrastructural achievements with financial and technological assistance from the central Government and other parts of the country.

It said 11.43 billion yuan (HK$10.67 billion) had been earmarked for infrastructure since the beginning of the 1990s, and 2.9 billion yuan would be invested in 1997.

Work has included rebuilding the highway connecting Tibet with Nepal.
