Sunday jogger caught in fast lane

An expatriate jogger out for a morning run caused some confusion during the men's 5,000 metres at the Watson's Hong Kong Open Athletics Championships yesterday.

The jogger took to the Wan Chai Sports Ground track just minutes before the gun went off, and completed several laps before Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association officials noticed that something was not right.

Race winner Kjeld Dissing could not believe what was happening when he overtook the jogger on the back straight on lap five, but he was relieved when an official persuaded the uninvited visitor to leave the track two laps later.

Despite the distraction, Dissing convincingly won the race and the men's overall individual championship, following his victory on Saturday in the 10,000 metres.

Li Chun-nei claimed the women's overall title after winning the long jump and triple jump, and finishing third in the women's 100 metres hurdles.

The men's high jump was decided on a countback after three athletes cleared two metres. Chang Yu-ho took the honours from Chan Ming-san and Chan Kiu-chong.

Women's sprinter Wan Kin-yee, who missed the 100 metres qualifying standard for next year's Asian Games by a hundredth of a second, added a second gold by winning the 400 metres hurdles.

Leung Tai-wai won the men's 800 metres in 2:01.92, edging out Wong Kin-on who clocked 2:02.25.
