Youth organisation Breakthrough is distributing 180,000 free copies of its guide to better communication between parents and children.
The Listening Guide Book, one of the core programmes in Breakthrough's 'Embracing Generation Next' campaign, is an easy-to-follow, reader-friendly, practical guide which encourages parents to spend time every day to listen to the needs and dreams of their children.
Simon Li Siu-hong, assistant general secretary of Breakthrough, said Hong Kong people lived in a pressured environment and communication between parents and children was limited.
'Among Breakthrough's counselling cases, over 90 per cent of youngsters face problems that are directly or indirectly related to insufficient communication within the family. 'It is really a serious issue,' Mr Li said.
The book consists of two booklets, one for the parents and the other for children.
The Parents' Book explains the meaning, techniques and benefits of proper listening, while the Energetic Generation, the children's book, offers guidance to youngsters on how to effectively communicate with their parents.
'We believe if parents really care about their children's development, the first step should be listening to the inner heart of the youngster,' Mr Li said.
'That's why we choose 'listening' as our main theme, and 'Stop for 10 Minutes Each Day, Listen to the Dreams of Youth', as our slogan this year.
'We have organised various activities on this theme, with the Listening Guide Book for free distribution and Listening Day as our prelude programme.' The cover design of the Listening Guide Book depicts a mother with her son, whose image has been reduced to show how the voice of children is often ignored in an adult world.
More than 150,000 copies of the book will be distributed to Form One andTwo students.
Another 30,000 copies will be distributed at 7-Eleven convenience stores; six Hong Kong Telecom CSL retail outlets (in Aberdeen, Cheung Sha Wan, Kornhill Plaza, Ngau Tau Kok Road, Tuen Mun Town Plaza, and Castle Peak Road); and five KCR Customer Service Centres (in Hunghom, Sha Tin, Tai Po Market, Sheung Shui and Lo Wu); Hang Seng Bank branches, Breakthrough Books Galleries, and the Breakthrough Parents Club.
