Connors takes third Slipper

SYDNEY trainer Clarry Connors notched a third victory in the A$2 million Golden Slipper Stakes (1,200 metres) at Rosehill yesterday when Prowl outsped his two-year-old rivals for a comfortable win, writes Graeme Kelly.

'The first one is always the best,' said Connors, who had previously won the event with Tierce (1991) and the following year with Burst, who like Prowl is by 1987 Golden Slipper winner Marauding.

'But this was great because it was something we really began planning 12 months ago.' Prowl was given the run of the race by jockey Chris Munce.

From the two barrier Munce was able to settle Prowl in second place behind the pacemaker Splendid Horse.

He then continued on strongly to defeat the Danehill youngster Shoving, who was ridden brilliantly by Mick Dittman to overcome a wide draw of 16.

Prowl's stablemate Glamis - also by Marauding - finished fast to be a close-up third after jumping from barrier 15.

'It was a top effort,' former Hong Kong jockey Greg Childs said of the performance of Glamis.

'The barrier beat her. I had to drop her a long way back early but she made up lengths in the straight. She was conceding them too much start.'
