P&O Nedlloyd

P&O Nedlloyd is to replace 330 British and New Zealand seamen with 'cheaper' Filipino workers, blaming tough market conditions for the move.

The decision brought immediate condemnation from British Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott who described it as a blow to British shipping, and especially to loyal seafarers who worked in the industry.

'I deplore P&O Nedlloyd's decision, particularly at a time when I am trying, with the industry, to develop a joint policy to revive British shipping and secure more jobs for British seafarers,' Mr Prescott was quoted as saying by Lloyd's List.

The plan also was blasted by Britain's rail, maritime and transport trade union, which described it as 'unforgiveable'.
