Let down

According to reports in the media, Chris Patten was supposed to be at the Popular Book Centre, Sha Tin, from 3.30pm till 5.30pm, on Friday, October 30, to sign copies of his book East And West.

However, he was late in arriving and spent less than half-an-hour in the bookshop.

During this time, he only signed about 10 books.

This was unfair to those of us who had been waiting for as long as four hours.

We bought the books from this bookshop, at no discount, because we had been told he would sign them in front of us.

If we had known he was only going to turn up for such a short time, we would not have bothered waiting for him.

His publisher Macmillan made no announcements about Mr Patten being delayed.

We were left completely in the dark and just lined up, feeling like fools.

The Popular Book Centre continued to sell copies of Mr Patten's book after his arrival. Customers were misled into thinking that he would sign a maximum of three books per person.

Therefore, quite a lot of people, including me and my friend bought three copies at full price, even though a nearby bookstore was offering a 20 per cent discount. Mr Patten owes all of us an apology.
