Security guard out of bounds

While taking photos from the pedestrian walkway between Swire House and World Wide House recently, a security guard prodded me and motioned me to move. I was neither causing an obstruction - it is a wide walkway and I had only been there a few minutes - nor was I using a tripod (which requires special clearance).

What right or justification do these people have for trying to impose such preposterous rules? Is it really company policy? Is it legal? Is it necessary? For all that guard knew I was a tourist taking pictures of the street scene. What impression will this create if people are rudely ordered to move on simply for taking a photograph? In all my years of photography this is the first time I have encountered such petty interference. Do the guard's employers/building owners have any comment? Of course it could all have been a big misunderstanding - perhaps he was trying to warn me that standing still and breathing, with our air pollution, is just not advisable! GARETH JONES Tin Hau
