Organisers of next year's Perrier Hong Kong Open are confident of attracting another top field in 1999, having scheduled the golf tournament a week after the World Cup in Malaysia.
Looking well ahead into the new year, organisers of the Open announced yesterday that the oldest golf competition in Hong Kong would be held from November 25-28 at Fanling.
'The 1999 Open will be staged just one week following the World Cup, which should be outstanding for us in our efforts to again secure major world stars,' said Steve Feuerstein, president of promoters Sports International Ltd.
A meeting among representatives of the Hong Kong Golf Club, the Hong Kong Golf Association and Sports International last week confirmed the 1999 dates.
This year's event, won by South Korean Kang Wook-soon, drew a top-quality field, including big-hitting American John Daly - making his debut in Hong Kong - US PGA champion Mark Brooks of the United States and 11-time USPGA Tour winner David Frost of South Africa.
'We were very impressed with this year's Open, it was simply a thrill,' said Peter Ma, president of the Hong Kong Golf Association. 'I'm sure the 1999 Open will be even more exciting.' Feuerstein assured local fans that a top-drawer field will be secured next year too.
'We are already working on this campaign and I can assure there will be positive surprises in store for fans in 1999,' said Feuerstein.
