Boys helped get better start

Caring social workers who help more than 620 children have a better start in life by giving them special attention and assistance are getting some recognition of their own.

The Society of Boys' Centres has been highlighted as part of the Jockey Club's Act of Kindness campaign, which is also supported by the Post. Established 47 years ago, the society takes boys between eight and 18 who have difficult family circumstances and lets them study in three special schools and stay in two housing quarters.

Students from families on welfare pay nothing, while the tuition fee for other students is $50. The society also runs two hostels for boys from broken families who study at ordinary schools.

'We believe the boys should learn how to communicate with their families. Our ultimate aim is they can live healthily at home,' social worker Wong Ping-kin said.

If any reader knows of an unsung hero who deserves praise, they should contact the Act of Kindness campaign by phoning 2966 8888, faxing 2966 7997, e-mailing aokhkjc.org.hk or writing to the Jockey Club at 1 Sports Road, Happy Valley.
