Students win study award

AT&T has launched the fifth annual AT&T Leadership Award programme which gives financial assistance to students from Asia studying in the United States. The company also announced the names of the 36 students who won 1998 AT&T Leadership Awards, including two students from Hong Kong.

The 1999 AT&T Leadership Award programme will offer 36 awards of US$5,000 (HK$38,700) to students from China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, the Philippines and Taiwan.

Hong Kong students Veron Hung and Rita Chan Yin-nei were 1998 award winners.

Winners were selected on the basis of academic results, a short essay on a leader who possesses qualities they feel are essential to be a good leader and standardised test scores (such as university entrance examinations and the GMAT).

'AT&T is pleased to support the future of young people from Asia-Pacific by offering financial support while they study in the US,' said Bernard Yee, regional managing director for AT&T Asia/Pacific.

The 1999 AT&T Leadership Award programme is open to first year full-time students at accredited US colleges or universities who begin their courses between January and September.

The AT&T Leadership Award programme is partially supported by the AT&T Foundation and is co-managed and administrated with the Malaysian-American Commission on Education Exchange in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The programme is organised in co-operation with various in- country US overseas education advice centres, including the Fullbright Commission.
