OVER 30,000 visitors, many in family groups, had an enjoyable day looking around the Academy for Performing Arts, Wan Chai, last Sunday when the APA held its annual open day.
Nearly all the students - including graduate, full-time and junior class pupils - were involved in the event.
Visitors saw for themselves the sophisticated facilities of the performing arts tertiary institution, and gained an idea of what the students were accomplishing.
Various dance, drama and music performances and exhibitions were presented throughout the day by students of the four schools of Dance, Drama, Technical Arts and Music.
There were Chinese and Western dancing, orchestra and band playing, opera singing, a hands-on display on stage craft and stage management, a demonstration of props making, an audio show, and an exhibition of outstanding student projects.
Video screens placed around the halls showed documentaries about the APA and student television productions.
Guided tours took guests around the APA's major venues, including the Lyric Theatre, the Drama Theatre, the Studio Theatre, the Concert Hall, the Recital Hall, the TV Department, the Wardrobe and the Scenic Paint Shop.
Large numbers headed for the dance studios where guests were welcome to take part in open classes prepared by students of the School of Dance.
The APA foyer and halls rang with the sound of music as students of the School of Music gave performances on brass, percussion, woodwind and stringed instruments.
On sale at special prices were souvenirs like T-shirts with the names and logos of the APA's different departments, compact discs and books on the arts.
Equally involved in the open day activities were members of the teaching staff. Lecturers and heads of various departments were present in their respective rooms to give visitors advice and answer questions about the APA and its courses.
The APA is a major tertiary institution that offers certificate, diploma and degree courses in the performing and technical arts.
Applications for APA courses beginning in September this year are now being accepted. The deadline is May 28.
