Topaz shine as records tumble at school meet

A big crowd was treated to two days of intense competition at the annual athletic meet organised by Hong Kong Chinese Women's Club College at Siu Sai Wan Sports Ground.

Even a light drizzle on the second day failed to dampen the spirits as more than 700 students, joined by the Parent- Teacher Association and invitation teams, put on a memorable display.

Eight records were established, with athletes - encouraged by their respective cheering teams - achieving new heights.

The most outstanding performer was Grade B individual champion Poon Ho-Yin.

The fifth-former won the 100- metre sprint, 100 m hurdles and the long jump.

Form 2A's Keung Yuk-tak, Fu Chun-hin (5D) and Fu Yu (6S) also excelled.

In an exciting climax, Topaz pipped the other three houses to emerge the overall champions.

The highlight of the meet was the invitation relays, which sparked loud cheering from spectators in the stands. Canossa College and Chong Gene Hang College won the 4 x 100 m relay events for secondary girls and boys, respectively.

This was also the first time primary schools were invited to join the action.

Shanghai Alumni Primary School won the 4 x 100 m relay, beating seven other primary school teams.

'Students should concentrate on all-round education and develop their morals, intelligence, and community spirit, while recognising the importance of sports and the arts,' said Chow Huk-wing, chairman of the Hong Kong Chinese Women's Club, who officiated at the prize-presentation ceremony.

'I hope more students take part in sports activities which will help them in the long run.' Thanks mainly to Ms Chow's efforts, the club had been able to raise funds to instal air-conditioners in the school hall.
