McEnroe wants tour date for HK

Hong Kong could become part of an expanded Asian leg on the Senior ATP Tour next year.

Moves are afoot to make Hong Kong and Singapore part of the circuit for the elder statesmen of world tennis, according to Richard Doggart, organiser of last week's Cathay Pacific Champions tournament.

Following on the calls from many of the players, including John McEnroe, to make Hong Kong part of the Senior Tour, Doggart said he would soon open discussions with the Senior ATP Tour.

He has already made a tentative booking of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre for the same time next year.

'We are certainly interested in seeing Hong Kong and Singapore become part of the Senior Tour. As we have seen this past week, the older players still play wonderful tennis,' said Doggart.

Three-time Wimbledon champion McEnroe led the chorus of calls for Hong Kong to join Tokyo as a stop on the Senior Tour.

'I would like to see Hong Kong become part of the Senior Tour next year,' said McEnroe, who gave a star class rating to this town.

'Hong Kong is a nutty place. There is so much energy in this town it is unbelievable. There is only one other place which comes close to Hong Kong and that is where I come from, New York. But I think the concentration of people in this town gives it more of a buzz,' said McEnroe.

There are currently 20 stops on the Senior ATP Tour, mostly in the US.
