Rally sounds note of hope for inmates

Inmates of correctional institutes showed their determination to turn over a new leaf at a musical rally held at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium in Wan Chai.

High Court Chief Judge Patrick Chan Siu-oi officiated at the opening ceremony.

Performances included a lion dance, drills, choir and band renditions and a drama about rehabilitation.

The performances by the scouts of the 221st Hong Kong Group and members of the 141st Island Ranger Guides demonstrated their commitment to serve the community and their determination to turn over a new leaf.

The 221st Hong Kong Group was established in 1986 as part of a training programme for residents of the Cape Collinson Correctional Institution and Lai King Training Centre. The 141st Island Ranger Guides Service Unit was set up in 1987 for inmates of Tai Tam Gap Correctional Institution.

Under the programme, inmates from training centres were offered scout and guide training and activities.

They were encouraged to participate in community services which would help them to reform.

Ticket sales for the event raised money for charity.

Meanwhile, music performed by the marching and pipe bands of the correctional institutions is featured on a CD titled Return of the Prodigal Son.
