Bids invited for LPG stations

Construction and operation of five liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) stations will be put out to tender today as part of the Government's plan to encourage the use of cleaner fuel for vehicles.

Secretary for Planning, Environment and Lands Gordon Siu Kwing-chue said the administration would select the bid that offered affordable LPG at the lowest price.

Mr Siu said the six local oil companies would provide LPG services at another 20 to 30 stations in the next year.

In his Policy Address in October, Tung Chee-hwa urged taxi and minibus operators to convert from diesel to LPG. He set a timetable to reduce pollution from vehicles by 80 per cent by 2006.

A $1.4 billion fund has been set aside to offset conversion costs for taxi operators. Funding will be available from next year.

The Government will also launch a pilot test for LPG-run minibuses in April.

More than 20,000 taxis operate in Hong Kong, but only 200 run on LPG. There are four refilling stations.
